Mike Fuson is a former contractor and a current member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Buford, Arkansas. The department includes 25 trained volunteers who provide firefighting and rescue support to the entire Buford district. This is a rural area of the Ozarks where buildings and cell towers are separated hills and huge expanses. This means many buildings in the area struggle with weak cell service.

The Challenge

The Buford Volunteer Fire Department is the main and largest firehouse for the area. The 7,200 square-foot building and the firefighters within it had specific needs which included: reliable cell coverage for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile; cost effective; DIY install friendly; free building design assistance.

The building is located in a very rural area where the outside cell signal strength is very weak. To be exact, the outside signal is as low as -112 dB, which is considered a No Service cell zone (Related: What Blocks a Cell Phone Signal?). The building’s exterior was constructed with materials that reflect cell signals – red iron, steel, and a steel, retractable roof – which means inside the building had no cell service for any cell carrier.

“We need to be quick to respond to fires or rescue operations and couldn’t do that with zero cell service inside our firehouse. We needed the best cell service we can get,” explained Mike Fuson, member of the Buford Volunteer Fire Department.

The need for reliable cell service was paramount being that any call to the department’s phone number was forwarded to the Chief’s cell phone. Missed and dropped calls were disrupting the department’s ability to remain connected inside of the building. To improve the weak cell signal, Fuson was considering two options; either install a landline or opt for an all US cell carrier signal booster (Related Post: AT&T Coverage Map). The decision boiled-down to which solution could be installed in-house to give the department better cell service at the best price.

The Solution

Fuson was familiar with SureCall after he used Fusion4Home to improve cell service in a medium size home. Seeing great results from his Fusion4Home signal booster, he contacted SureCall and was put in touch with a cellular solutions expert who performed a free in-building signal booster design and sent him pricing for a signal booster kit with Fusion5X 2.0 to get the best cell service in the medium size building.

The kit included the Fusion5X 2.0 cell phone signal booster, an omni-direction outside antenna, three inside dome antennas, plus the splitter and cables needed to connect the components. In addition to the kit components, Fuson also purchased one panel antenna and an antenna mounting pole for the outside antenna.

Altogether, the price came in quite a bit below the cost of installing a landline on the property and they have the added benefit of boosting cell service for all carriers, which means the entire department stays connected in the building.

The Results

Fuson, a retired contractor, is an experienced DIY’er and installed the system himself according to the signal booster design generated by his SureCall cellular solutions expert. After installing the Fusion5X 2.0 had captured the -112 dB signal outside of the building and boosted it to -92 dB signal inside the building for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint.

“We all use our cell phones and everyone in the firehouse has service now. Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T all work and we’re really happy we chose the SureCall,” explained Fuson.

The fire department’s building was situated in a very difficult to reach area of the Ozarks with dramatic elevation changes and a steel and iron construction building that completely reflected cell signals. The SureCall Fusion5X 2.0 uses more power to cover 2X more area than the closest alternative for medium to large size buildings.

Overall, the Buford Volunteer Fire Department has been very pleased with the results and they rest easy knowing that when a call comes through, they will be able to receive it and spring into action.
